Flicks on The Field: Top Gun

Anyone who knows me… really knows me, knows I love the cinematic masterpiece from the mid 1980’s, Top Gun. It’s perfection. My parents took me to see it in the Theaters when I was 5, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s probably still one of the best decisions they ever made (sorry Mom and Dad).

I became obsessed. I still remember later that year or the next year, when it was released on VHS. That’s back before the days that people bought movies as they do today, and tapes would retail for like $75-100! My Dad brought it home, and we had a movie-night. Popcorn, on the couch, and Top Gun on the TV. He probably watched it 2-3 times over the course of ownership. Not me. I watched it. Every. Single. Day.

I had a toy F-14, and would fly it around while watching the movie. Pretty soon, I learned the words to the movie. Soon after that, I learned all the words. Then I probably knew the movie better than even the Director (RIP Tony Scott).

I take this movie seriously, to the point, I try not to watch it that much anymore. It consumes me, and I have a hard time NOT repeating the movie, line by line. Sydney can’t stand it, but yet, wants to watch it. I have to REALLY try not to recite it like I was in Drama Class.

Fast Forward to last night. The Las Vegas Ballpark is starting a series of movies, called Flicks on The Field. Really a genius concept. When the team is not in town, there are firing up the LED screen, which happens to be the BIGGEST LED screen in Minor League Baseball, and playing classic movies for all to enjoy. At $2 a ticket, it’s worth every penny. You can bring blankets, stadium seats, or even sit in the seats at the park.

Setup your Blankets or Stadium seats and catch a movie and enjoy the views

What a great night for a Ball game, I mean, movie. The weather was great, and it’s always cool to be on the field. We all forget how big baseball diamonds are. Much bigger than even football fields. There were families with little kids running around! You could easily talk to people next to you without getting dirty looks, because after 30 years, if you haven’t seen Top Gun, I don’t know what to tell ya. And, the view doesn’t suck from INSIDE the stadium and on the field. Check out some of the shots we were able to get of a great night.
